I love this skirt, but the fit is a little date...

Please ignore the top and shoes; I know it's a winter skirt! I've had this wool skirt since 2003ish. I'm in love with the colors & pattern & lace edge, but I'm not loving the fit & flare shape anymore! Can anything be done? By a tailor perhaps?

The skirt is fabulous, but perhaps a bit long on you? I think it might look better if it were an inch shorter...

It seems pretty classic to me. Keep it simple with black pumps and a nice fitted sweater.

you can just keep wearing it ..7 yrs old and still looks great on you ... never would have noticed the lace at the bottom either unless you did what you did to show it just now.

I see this beautiful trumpet skirt with Prada or Chanel accessories. Perhaps a fitted jacket or a charmeuse silk blouse.

I like it. The shape was trendier a few years ago, but it's graceful and flattering - and tweedy plaid should transcend fashion. Update with accessories - maybe antique black lace as tied as a scarf? Or a Lanvin-ish ribbon-and-rhinestone necklace?

I love trumpet skirts. I actually think that they are very flattering on many body types. I sew, but I wouldn't fancy attempting to turn a this skirt into a pencil skirt. Remove the lace and take the hem to above your knee. Voila, an updated skirt!

I don't think the style is the best, or the worst. It's ok for winter.

High waist is an option, but then the flounce would start at your low hip and make you wider than reality... :(

From a tailor's POV, the way this skirt is cut, it would make it difficult to make this into a pencil skirt. The pattern at the seams would not match up properly and look odd... Shortening it would mess up with the proportions...

@vicente, fun idea, but I don't want it to look costumey. Plus, my hair is all wrong for that naughty secretary look, lol!

Instead of updating it, you could just make the most of it by playing up the retro feel that it gives off. A bit Mad Men, which is hot right now. I agree with JanieDeere. I think you would look darling as a naughty secretary.

@eibhis, do you think the waist is too low as is? I was thinking it could stand to be a touch higher if I went the high-waisted route, and that would require taking in.

@stella, that's what I was wondering. Do you think it would be expensive? Or what about making it into a mini, not too short, but a few inches above the knee?

if you have a really good tailor in your area maybe they could alter it to a pencil skirt?

@Janie: I often wear it with a maroon sweater to match the color of the plaid. But I'm mostly concerned about the fit/style looking dated.

What woudl it look like with a white or red shirt/blouse and black pumps?

Skirt is too long, and not enough contrast with all pieces. Only thing I can think of is to shorten above the knee
